Stock screening using the finviz screener: one example

There are thousands of stocks being actively traded on the US stock market. How could one identify a potential list of stocks with great upside? This post walks through how to screen stocks using custom criteria through the finviz screener.

Worth noting: data displayed on finviz is delayed by 15–20 minutes. It should NOT be used for live trading. There is also an unofficial Python API for finviz.

For example, one is interested in investing in the infrastructure sector as the Biden administration put forth a $2 trillion infrastructure plan. The following screenshots show one example of a criterion for screening companies in the “Engineering & Construction Sector” with a small number of shares, high growth potential and upside.

Figure 1: applying filters in the “Descriptive” section. Industry: “Engineering & Construction”. Float: “Under 50M”
Figure 2: applying filters in the “Fundamental” section. EPS growth next year: “Over 30%”. Institutional Ownership: “Under 50%”.
Figure 3: Screener results. One can research more on the individual stocks for further investment decisions.
